I would argue that caring for your body in traditional ways- like eating a healthy diet, exercising, and taking your vitamins- may be the least important part of your health. (I know! Radical idea coming from a doctor!)

This may sound shocking to you. After all, you’ve probably watched many other doctors get on television to tell you that your health is all about using food as medicine, getting enough exercise, and avoiding bad habits. I’m not suggesting that those aren’t great health-inducing behaviors. What I’m saying is that it doesn’t matter how great your diet is if your body is flooded with stress hormones! No amount of kale is going to counterbalance the toxic effects of high levels of cortisol and epinephrine on your body.

So what’s the most important part of your health? The nature of your thoughts, beliefs, and feelings. When your thoughts, beliefs, and feelings are positive, relaxation responses are activated, healing hormones like oxytocin, dopamine, nitric oxide, and endorphins are released, and the body’s natural self-repair mechanisms are activated, allowing the body to do what it does best-heal itself.

Tostada de Aguachile.

Aguachile literally means “Chili Water”. The dish consists of raw shrimp (they cook in the high acidity of the lime juices). a lot of lime, enough to drench all the shrimp, some red onions and a lot of diced serrano peppers and cucumbers. Some recipes will have cooked and raw shrimp to give more variety in texture.

Shit, just learning how to do stuff is out of reach for a lot of people. You think, “it’d be cool to learn to knit or sew or decorate cakes or paint or write poetry or cook little cute trinket things or latch hook or shoot a bow or throw an axe at a tree or groom a dog or do your makeup in something different and splashy or do nails or make music or ride a bike with no hands or get good at that sandy shuffleboard game in bars or do the jitterbug or collect all the pokemon or learn a karate or work with little kids teachin em how to fly kites or coaching little kids basketball or walkin down the street without gettin harassed or be able to flip a bowl onto your head while riding a unicycle or be a giant slinky or do trampoline dunks or be able to walk into a store without getting followed by managers or not get called a criminal just for being born with brown skin or do a handstand or make a video game or sing like beyonce or get real good at ski ball or open a donut stand at the beach” but then you gotta go work two and three jobs or take care of your kids or take care of someone in your family who is sick, or just be the generally responsible one of your friend group and you really just don’t have time to do anything but work and eat and sleep, and sometimes not eat or sleep. You can’t do what you want. Those doors aren’t open to you, and if you’re a poor person of color (and especially a queer poc) then no one is going to blink in assistance for you. You’re just shit out of luck. Lots of stuff poor folks want to do doesn’t cost money. It just costs a time capital they don’t have. Then when they eventually have the time and money to attempt to do something for themselves they’ll get reamed by rich people for having the audacity to watch TV while being poor, or have a goddamned refrigerator.
